Bangladesh is the 3rd largest populated Muslim country in the world. Its language “Bangla” is the 6th most widely spoken language in the world, and Bangla is expected to become one of the official languages of the United Nation.

Bangladesh also known to be one of the longest sea beach in the world “Coxes Bazar” which was nominated to be one of the new 7 Wonders of Beauty for 2009.

Ekushe February ~

21st February was proclaimed the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on 17th November 1999. Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

The International Mother Language Day is being observed every year in UNESCO’s Member States and at its Headquarters to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism

On that day of 21st February 1952, corresponding to 8 Falgun 1359 in the Bangla calendar, a number of students campaigning for the recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan were killed when police fired upon them. Mohammed Ali Jinnah(the Governor general of Pakistan) declared that the Urdu will be the only language for both west and east Pakistan at a public meeting on 1948, 21st March. The people of the East Pakistan (now Bangladesh, whose main language is Bengali) started to protest against this. A student meeting on 21st February called for a province-wide strike. But the government invoked Section 144 on 20 February. The student community at a meeting on the morning of 21 February agreed to continue with their protest but not to break the law of Section 144. Even then the police opened fire and killed to the student’s procession.

Declaration of independence ~

The violence unleashed by the Pakistani forces on 25th March 1971, proved the last straw to the efforts to negotiate a settlement. Following these outrages, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman signed an official declaration that read:

Today Bangladesh is a sovereign and independent country. On Thursday night, West Pakistani armed forces suddenly attacked the police barracks at Razarbagh and the EPR headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka. Many innocent and unarmed have been killed in Dhaka city and other places of Bangladesh. Violent clashes between E.P.R. and Police on the one hand and the armed forces of Pakistan on the other, are going on. The Bengalis are fighting the enemy with great courage for an independent Bangladesh. May Allah aid us in our fight for freedom. Joy Bangla. Sheikh Mujib also called upon the people to resist the occupation forces through a radio message. Mujib was arrested on the night of 25–26 March 1971 at about 1:30 a.m. (as per Radio Pakistan’s news on 29th March 1971). A telegram containing the text of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s declaration reached some students in Chittagong. The message was translated to Bangla by Dr. Manjula Anwar. The students failed to secure permission from higher authorities to broadcast the message from the nearby Agrabad Station of Radio Pakistan. They crossed Kalurghat Bridge into an area controlled by an East Bengal Regiment under Major Ziaur Rahman. Bengali soldiers guarded the station as engineers prepared for transmission. At 19:45 hrs on 27th March 1971, Major Ziaur Rahman broadcasted from the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendro the announcement of the Declaration of IndependencePeople’s Republic of Bangladesh” on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We shall fight to the last to free our Motherland. By the grace of Allah, victory is ours.
